Archive maps on a table
the fabulous experts at Knowsley Archives supporting volunteers to explore local maps, documents, and contemporary accounts to unearth and share the farming and food heritage facts and stories of Knowsley

We’re digging, unearthing, and building community links

This update will give you a quick overview of what we’ve been focusing on lately and ow we’ve been building our project community.

Our team of archivers are meeting on Wednesdays and are really digging deep.

So far, the team have unearthed fantastic history on Kirkby. This includes evidence of it’s oldest farms and photographs of the area from that time. Over the coming weeks focus will widen to other areas. More volunteers are needed so if you’re free on a Wednesday afternoon or have a keen eye for research then please contact us to join in.

Creativity is well underway at Stockbridge Village.

Our first craft session in Stockbridge Village was open to all and provided an introduction to the project. Craig’s Community Centre has been a hub for craft sessions recently with our artist Kirsty running sessions with local families. They’ve been creating a community tablecloth and napkins using potatoes and other natural. Another craft session with children, as part of the Play Streets session run by StockyWhizzKidz, took place to encourage more involvement in the project.

We’re getting ready to capture all your memories and experiences

We’re currently setting up the storytelling sessions for May/June. We’ve been reaching out to local farming families who are happy to share their stores of Knowsley’s farming heritage. We’ll be working with students at the college and we’re also looking for some youth groups to get involved – if you or your group would like to become storytellers please get in touch.

Seeing Pictures workshops being planned for the Summer term

Our photographer, Tony is getting a great basis to work from with a supply of images being found in the archives. He’ll be working with local media students through a series of photography workshops over the summer.

A Knowsley community kitchen space

We think we’ve found the perfect community kitchen space to use. This means, we’ll soon have our cooking sessions booked into run over the summer with a small group of volunteers.

Exhibition

All of the above will culminate with a lasting exhibition for all to share in Knowsley’s rich agricultural past. The exhibition will bring farming heritage alive and help shape a better food future in our community. More details to follow on this in the future.
